I hear these terms being used interchangeably, Coronavirus or COVID- 19. What does it all mean and when can we use it? Let’s start with some background.

How do we name viruses:

Once a new or novel virus is discovered ( novel meaning new to us humans and our immune system) it is viewed under a microscope. Based on what the virus looks like under the microscope that’s how the name is formulated. For the coronavirus, it gets its name from the spikes or the projections which look like a crown.download.jpg

Corona = crown.

Firstly, I would like to apologize for my absence from this blog. It has been months since the last post.  I’m sorry.

Picture this: Monrovia, Liberia, it’s 1996 and my 5-year-old self is frantic and sad trying to understand why we had to leave our home and relocate. Strangers are flooding into our home with packed bags and broken hearts. Mommy and daddy are deciding whether to stay or flee. What was most important to bring along but also having to remember to pack light. My younger brother, Sam, is 2 years or younger.

I can still remember the frightening sounds of bullets as they flew back and forth and back and forth; We had to move on foot. We traveled for miles amongst a large crowd not knowing if we were walking in the direction of the bullets or to safety. Daddy and my elder brother took turns holding me up as I got tired, while Sam was tied to my mother’s back.

Where were we going?

How do we know it’s safe?

WHY ARE THEY SHOOTING?!

“Great men don’t cry!“

Growing up daddy would often repeat that statement to Sam, my younger brother. As Sam is sobbing, he would repeat it, “greeeeat meeennnn don’t cryyyyy” (lol- that right there was my best impression of talking while crying). It was so funny to me, and to this day I still tease him about it. Sam had to be 3 or 4 and his understanding of what it took to be a great man was definitely not a priority to him at the time. During my psychiatry rotation, I came across many individuals from different walks of life. Most of them were admitted for substance or alcohol use disorder and a few with mood disorders. There was one particular case that a colleague of mine was covering that really hit home for me.Unknown-2.jpeg

She was following an African American male in his early-mid twenties, who self-admitted due to Major Depressive Disorder and Suicidal Ideations. He was a senior at a prestigious university, a member of a fraternity and played on his university’s football team. From the outside, you may think he had it all together; his future looked bright and he was headed for nothing but success. Deep down, he was suffering.
